Minutes to Apr23rd Meeting – Be a Magician to Yourself

Are you jealous of Harry Potter’s unique magic? Do you wish to have the ability of transfiguration? Do you want to know what transfiguration means? In the meeting tonight, under the guide of our Toastmaster Forrest, probably, your wish came true.

Firstly, TTM Kitty Zhang took the role of Albus Dumbledore ( a role in Harry Porter). As a teacher, she taught us a magic word “transfiguration”. Any time we said this word, pointing at a bag with her magic cane, some dramatic things would happen. Every participant got a precious gift. For example, Joe owned a packet of candy, and Lydia got a cap made of paper. Liu Bing was lucky to be the owner of a beautiful girl (paper-made of course). He successfully avoided some forbidden topics in our club and did a great job.

In the prepared speeches session, Hong Xie presented her CC2 speech. She told us two stories to prove her idea. Her speech had a good structure. And she presented it with confidence. As Liu Bing said, it was cheerful, and it could have been better if there were some linkage between those stories.

Yoly’s speech was about Earth Day. She took the Snow Disaster in Southern China this year to start her present. Those vivid pictures and that mind map impressed all of us.

Francis Shin was the third speaker. As a Korean, he asked us that who was the most famous Chinese people in Korea. This question warmed the atmosphere immediately. The answer was Confucius. Apparently, Francis did enough research. His colorful pictures and effective body languages helped him presented the speech fluently.

Finally, let me quoted what our Quote Master said, “there is real magic in enthusiasm. It spells the difference between mediocrity and accomplishment.” I believe only if we stuck to our goal with enthusiasm, we could own some fabulous magic.

Minutes to Apr16th Meeting – Sports

Last night we had an active and exciting meeting. Our Toastmaster, Jason Jiao, led us through a sports-themed meeting. Our experienced Table Topics master Nancy challenged our creativity and quick-thinking, clear speaking ability by having us talk about meeting sports stars in different sports. Allen played volleyball with the great Lang Ping. Francis played football with Li Ning. Susan fenced with Mr Xiao Bei. Our guest Sherry, told an interesting story of two people named Guo Jing Jing and how they got confused with each other and how the wrong one won the marathon. It was an active session with 8 participants.

Our strong General Evaluation team was led by Yoly and supported by a strong team: Wordsmith CK, who brought us the word of the day: requisite; Ah Counter was Daisy, who helped us and herself reduce our Ahs/Uhs/ You knows/ as you can sees; our Timer was a guest Jack, but he gave one of the best Timer performances I have ever seen. It was definitely a gold winning performance.

To read more about his performance and about our two great speeches, Kitty talking about how to make a cheesecake and  Allen talking about keeping fit with easy sports, and for more details of the meeting, read on below.

Minutes to Apr9 Meeting – Movies

Word: engage, engaged,

Quote: Joy shared with others are more enjoyful. (与人同乐,其乐无穷)

Life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you’re gonna get”. At the same way, our club is just like a piece of delicious chocolate. The more we are engaged in, the more we’ll appreciate.

Today, Sue Jiang brought us an appealing topic—-movie. She successfully led us to enjoy the charm of those great films.

In table topic session, TTM Jason Jiao provided us an opportunity to take roles in some famous movies. Forrest became a superman, while ridiculously, he had to stay in “lady’s toilet”. His fast thinking helped him get out of the embarrassing situation. Grace Tang was lucky to be 007, “he” achieved to invite a beauty (Chang E) in moon to have dinner with “him”. Joe had no such good fortune. He turned to be “Rose in Titannic”, while staying in a swimming pool. His rich gestures and surprising ending made him won the best table topic speaker award. Other participants—Yoly, Kitty, Daisy and Guest Manda had good performance too.

Prepared speech session was very attractive. For the two members, Liu Bing and Forrest gave their ACB5 and ACS3 speeches. Faced with crisis, Liu Bing presented his skills to resolve it successfully. He could explain the situation with emphases. His proper smiles, decent sentences impressed all of us. The good structure of his speech also helped him presented his idea clearly. Forrest did as well as Liu Bing. In his speech, he used cartoon pictures to explain some situations vividly. What’s more, he invited Joe to play a short drama, to further visualize his 5 steps of dealing with criticism, those were” listen, acknowledge, ask questions, paraphrase, agree with truth”.

At last, with the help of her great team, our General Evaluator Kitty gave all of us a wonderful evaluation.

An impressive night!

Minutes to Apr 2nd Meeting – Spring

Word: desperate—long for

Quote: Stay hungry, Stay foolish—said by Steve Jobs

Table Topic Session was always an interesting part in our club. Today, participants got a letter and said anything about the letter with his/her imagination. The first challenger was Matt. At first, he was confused by the letter “p/d” on the paper, but immediately he made the relationship between the letter with the word tonight ” desperate”, which contained both “p” and “d”. Then he successfully presented his speech with good structure and nice ending. Joe’s letter was “S”. It was amazing that he spoke out so many words with “S” in such a logical order. ” Start to speak… several… second… start…stop… names… super… so…someday… students… similar, special…s(th)ousands…” his fast thinking and humorous speech gave us strong impression. Allen always could inspire others’ emotion with his zealousness. His letter “J” of course brought us a lot of fun because he related it with “joker”. Also, guest Denis thought “t” as “tea”, Rebecca took “h” for “chair” cause of its figure, Jason Jia considered “l” as “love”, C.K. took “b” as “beginner”. Thanks for our TTM Forrest, who gave us a chance to exhibit such wonderful imagination with the simplest tools—-26 English letters.

Jade Shen made her ice breaker speech today. She introduced herself in the following picture (Sorry for my poor painting, although I had tried my best to copy her’s). As her constellation was double fish and her blood type was AB, Jade Shen thought herself was a girl with two sides. And she presented her character with a surprising story in her childhood that she began to say words in her 2 years’ old. FFrenchand E (England) were the her dreaming countries. And the boy and girl in the picture were her Mr. dreamy and herself of course. As a CC1 speaker, Jade gave her speech in such a vivid picture with jokes and rich body language, although her pronunciation and the story structure needed get improved, it was a great success for her. (cause some unknown reason , please see the accesory to appreciate the picture)

Grace made her CC3 speech. In her belief, “love is more powerful than death”. She persuaded us with a moving love story and made the final conclusion “Devoting love is true love”. Her confidence, good gesture and colorful pictures got high evaluation for her evaluator Matt.

Susan shared her driving experience with us. Personally, I liked her speech very much, especially as she described her intense mood in which she drove her car as a greener, some onomatopoeia, variations in her voice and gestures helped her speech full of fun. But as the evaluator Denis pointed out, if she had more eye contact and had better organized the structure, such as revising the beginning and ending, she would do better.

Anyway, this was a funny evening. Thanks a lot for our toastmaster Lydia.

By the way, in this summary, I combined my evaluation with those of the evaluators, sometimes for some reason, I cited their sentences without saying their name or without quotation marker. If you don’t think it’s OK, or you don’t like the writing style, please let me know, I’ll try my best to do better. Thank you very much.
